तो भक्तों इस कहानी कि शुरुआत होती है उस समय से जब रावण पहली बार भगवान शिव की तपस्या कर रहा होता है,
हज़ारों वर्षों तक तपस्या करने के पश्चात भी भगवान शिव रावण से प्रसन्न नहीं होते हैं क्योंकि भगवान शिव रावण की भक्ति की परीक्षा लेने चाहते थे, तभी एक दिन रावण भक्ति भाव में इतना डूब जाता है कि वो देवों के देव महादेव को खुश करने के लिए अपने सिर की आहुति देने का निश्चय करता है, और भक्ति भाव में वो भगवान भोलेनाथ को स्मरण करते हुए अपने सिर को अपने शरीर से काटकर अलग कर देता है, लेकिन हैरान की बात तब हो जाती है जब सिर काटने के बाद भी रावण की मृत्यु होने के बजाय वो जीवित ही रहता है, और भोलेनाथ कि कृपा से उसका दूसरा सिर प्रकट हो जाता है, लेकिन रावण किसी भी तरह से भगवान शिव को प्रसन्न करना चाहता था, इसलिए वो अपने दूसरे प्रकट हुए सिर को भी भगवान भोलेनाथ की भक्ति में अर्पित कर देता है लेकिन इसके बाद फिर से रावण के शरीर में एक और सिर प्रकट हो जाता है, जिसे रावण फिर से काट देता है ऐसा करते करते रावण 9 बार अपने सिर को काट देता है और वो दसवी बार प्रकट हुए सिर को भी वो काटने ही वाला होता है कि तभी भगवान भोलेनाथ उसकी भक्ति से प्रसन्न होकर प्रकट हो जाते हैं और उसे उसका सिर काटने से रोक देते हैं, रावण की भक्ति से प्रस्सन होकर सबसे पहले तो भगवान भोलेनाथ उसके सभी कटे हुए सिरों को पुनः जीवित करके रावण को दशानन होने का वरदान देते हैं और रावण कि इक्षा पूरी करने के बाद वहाँ से पुनः कैलाश को विलीन हो जाते हैं इसी दिन से रावण भगवान शिव का परम भक्त कहलाने लगा इसे भी देखें : क्यों श्री हनुमान जी ने चीरा अपना सीना ?
लेकिन रावण के दस सिर को लेकर कुछ लोगों का बिल्कुल अलग मानना है,,, इसे लेकर कुछ लोग मानते हैं कि
रावण के 10 सिर नहीं थे। वह 10 सिर हाने का भ्रम पैदा करता था, इसलिए दशानन कहलाता था। जैन शास्त्रों के अनुसार, रावण के गले में 9 मणियों की माला थी, उन मणियों में उसका सिर दिखता था जिससे दूसरों को 10 सिर होने का भ्रम पैदा हो जाता था,, दशानन को लेकर कुछ लोग ये भी मानते हैं कि रावण बहुत विद्वान था, उसे 6 दर्शन और 4 वेद कंठस्थ थे, इसलिए उसका नाम दसकंठी भी था। और बाद में दसकंठी को ही लोगों ने दस सिर मान लिया
