किंवदंती 5000 वर्ष पुरानी है जब पांडव इंद्रप्रस्थ में विशेष अग्नि समारोह कर रहे थे, दुष्ट आत्मा उनके संस्कारों में बाधा डाल रही थी। श्री कृष्ण ने पांडव राजकुमार भीम को वाराणसी जाने और भगवान भैरव से प्रार्थना करने की सलाह दी क्योंकि वह बुरी आत्माओं के देवता हैं। वह एक पत्थर की छवि के रूप में भीम की मदद करने के लिए सहमत हो गया, लेकिन किसी कारण से छवि को अपने साथ स्थान पर नहीं ले जा सकता है, इसलिए काल भैरव ने उसे आशीर्वाद दिया कि वह अपने रोने से संस्कारों की रक्षा करेगा और यही कारण है कि उसे मिला नाम किलकारी भैरव।

And that is the reason why he got the name Kilkari Bhairav.
