भगवान शिव अपने शीश पर चंद्रमा क्यों धारण करते हैं?
भगवान शिव को शक्ति का अपार भंडार माना जाता है। इस कारण से ही संसार में युगों-युगों से उनकी पूजा होती आ रही है। जीवन व मृत्यु से परे भगवान शिव जहां संसार में विनाशक के रूप में पूजनीय हैं, वहीं उन्हें जीवनदाता भी माना गया है। दरअसल शिव महापुराण में ऐसी कई कहानियां मिलती हैं, जिनसे उनके इन रूपों के दर्शन होते हैं। ऐसी ही एक कहानी शिवपुराण में वर्णित है जिसमें शिवजी द्वारा चंद्रमा के प्राणों की रक्षा करने के लिए उन्हें अपनी जटाओं में विराजित करने की पूरा कथा निहित है।
मंथन से निकला विषपान किया
उस पौराणिक कथा के अनुसार, जब समुद्र मंथन किया गया था तो उसमें से हलाहल विष भी निकला था। जिससे पूरी सृष्टि की रक्षा के लिए स्वयं भगवान शिव ने समुद्र मंथन से निकले उस विष का पान किया। मगर विष पीने के बाद उनका शरीर विष के प्रभाव से अत्यधिक गर्म होने लगा। यह देखकर चंद्रमा ने उनसे प्रार्थना की वह उन्हें माथे पर धारण कर अपने शरीर को शीतलता प्रदान करें। ऐसे विष का प्रभाव भी कुछ कम हो जाएगा
इसके लिए पहले तो शिव नहीं मानें, क्योंकि चंद्रमा श्वेत और शीतल होने के कारण उस विष की तीव्रता सहन नहीं कर पाते। लेकिन अन्य देवताओं के निवेदन के बाद शिव इसके लिए मान गए और उन्होंने चंद्रमा को अपने मस्तक पर धारण कर लिया। ऐसी लोकमान्यता है कि तभी से चंद्रमा भगवान शिव के मस्तक पर विराजित हैं और पूरी सृष्टि को अपनी शीतलता प्रदान कर रहे हैं। हालांकि इससे जुड़ी एक अन्य पौराणिक कथा भी है। जिसके अनुसार, चंद्रमा को पुनः जीवित करने के लिए शिवजी ने अपने मस्तक पर उन्हें धारित किया।

इसलिए किया चंद्रमा को धारित
दरअसल चंद्रमा का विवाह दक्ष प्रजापति की 27 नक्षत्र कन्याओं के साथ संपन्न हुआ, जिसमें रोहिणी उनके सबसे समीप थीं। यह देख अन्य कन्याओं ने अपने पिता दक्ष से अपना दुख प्रकट किया तो स्वभाव से बेहद क्रोधी राजा दक्ष ने चंद्रमा को शाप दे दिया। जिसके बाद क्षय रोग से ग्रस्त होने के कारण धीरे-धीरे चंद्रमा की कलाएं क्षीण होती गईं। फिर नारदजी ने उन्हें भगवान शिव की आराधना करने को कहा, तो भोलेभंडारी ने प्रदोष काल में चंद्रमा को पुनः जीवित होने का वरदान दिया। जिससे चंद्रमा मृत्युतुल्य होते हुए भी मृत्यु को प्राप्त नहीं हुए और फिर धीरे-धीरे स्वस्थ होने लगे और पूर्णमासी पर पूर्ण चंद्रमा के रूप में प्रकट हुए। इस तरह चंद्रमा को अपने सभी कष्टों से भगवान शिव की कृपा से मुक्ति मिली।

Beyond life and death, where Lord Shiva is worshiped as the destroyer in the world, he is also considered the giver of life. In fact, many such stories are found in Shiva Mahapuran, through which one can see these forms of him. One such story is described in Shivpuran, in which the whole story of Lord Shiva enslaving the Moon in his locks to protect his life is contained.

Drank the poison that came out of churning
According to that legend, when the ocean was churned, Halahal poison also came out of it. Due to which Lord Shiva himself drank the poison that came out of the churning of the ocean to protect the entire creation. But after drinking poison, his body started getting extremely hot due to the effect of poison. Seeing this, the moon prayed to him to give coolness to his body by wearing it on his forehead. The effect of such poison will also be reduced.
For this, Shiva should not be accepted first, because the moon being white and cool, cannot bear the intensity of that poison. But after the request of other deities, Shiva agreed to it and took the moon on his head. It is a popular belief that since then the moon is sitting on the head of Lord Shiva and is providing its coolness to the whole creation. However, there is another legend associated with it. According to which, to revive the moon, Lord Shiva held him on his head.

Actually, Moon's marriage took place with 27 Nakshatra girls of Daksha Prajapati, in which Rohini was closest to him. Seeing this, the other girls expressed their grief to their father Daksha, then King Daksha, very angry by nature, cursed the moon. After which, due to suffering from tuberculosis, gradually the arts of the moon started deteriorating. Then Naradji asked him to worship Lord Shiva, then Bholebhandari gave a boon to the moon to be alive again during the Pradosh period. Due to which the moon did not attain death even though it was mortal and then slowly started recovering and appeared as a full moon on the full moon. In this way the moon was freed from all his sufferings by the grace of Lord Shiva.
